REHABILITATION TECHNOLOGY SKILLS TRAINING
This training consists of the use of commercial and/or
custom devices, modifications, adaptations, or related technical services
to enhance functional capacities of individuals blind or visually impaired.
This service is divided into two components.
1. IDENTIFICATION: Identification of appropriate
Technology is an integral approach to achieving a successful outcome for
the program participant. All too often, the individual who is
blind/visually impaired is provided technology that does not adequately
meet his or her needs. Our plan of operation is constructed to prevent this
occurrence. A full-time computer specialist in a classroom setting
facilitates this component. Staff to consumer ratio is 1/1. These services
will include the assessment and identification of the appropriate
technology for use in a home, educational, or vocational environment. Staff
will assist the individual to identify the technology most suited for their
individual needs, abilities, capabilities and current and future visual
limitations and preferences.
2. TRAINING: Assistive Technology/Computer Training
occurs in the BSS Computer Lab. Participants are required to attend at
least three days a week at a minimum of two hours per day. Program
participants are expected to acquire the skills to independently operate
the computer equipment/adaptive technology most suitable for their
individual needs. The computer Lab is staffed by a highly trained and
experienced computer specialist. The Lab is open five days per week, Monday
through Friday, except for holidays, from 8-00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
