Orientation & Mobility & Travel Training
Services
At Blindness Support Services, Inc., Orientation and
Mobility Instruction and Travel Training is provided by 2 Certified
Orientation & Mobility (O&M) Specialists.
Mobility Instruction consists of learning proper
techniques for cane travel in both indoor and outdoor settings. It includes
the development of special concepts, orientation to neighborhood and
businesses, local geography, street crossings and bus travel.
The O&M Specialists work together with individuals
blind and visually impaired to design a specialized program to meet their
specific individual needs. One-on-one lessons are held 5 days a week on a
scheduled basis.
The Travel Training Program is designed to provide
persons blind/visually impaired/disabled with the skills and knowledge
essential when using the local fixed route bus system available throughout Western Riverside County.
The primary goal of the program is to provide training to enable the target
population to ride the local fixed route bus service safely and efficiently
and therefore reduce the demand on specialized para-transit services. It
should be understood that when circumstances arise, (i.e. changes to bus
routes, schedules & client needs) the re-training of program
participants may occur.
