DEPARTMENT OF EMPLOYMENT SERVICES
The major objective of the Department of Employment
Services at BSS is designed to assist the consumer to make well informed
choices which will open pathways to more lucrative employment
opportunities, increased productivity and independent lives.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Employment Preparation Job Development and Placement is
a program designed to assist persons who are blind/visually impaired to
identify, obtain and maintain employment commensurate with their
vocational, social, psychological and medical needs and their abilities.
The program is a package of individualized services that are divided into
two segments that assist job ready consumers to obtain and retain
competitive employment in their field of interest
A. Employment Preparation
1. Employment Preparation Services prepare consumers for
job seeking activities. This segment will offer the consumer the supportive
services that will increase their chances of achieving gainful employment.
A full-time Career Specialist will staff this segment. Consumers will be
expected to attend class 3 hours per day for at least three days a week on
an on-going basis.

Job Identification
Job Exploration techniques
Application and Resume Preparation
Interviewing Skills
Work Incentive Programs
B. Job Development and Placement
Job Development and Placement Services identify a
specific job opening(s) which are appropriate for each consumer based upon
their documented work experience and/or educational background. Following
satisfactory completion of segment 1, consumers will enter the job
development and placement segment offered through this agency. Exploration
of vocational objectives and opportunities will be a joint effort between
the Consumer and a full-time Job Developer. Consumers will be provided help
in the selection of the appropriate job according to the consumer's needs,
achieved level of skill and desired vocational goals. Assistance will be
provided in:
Job search
Setting up interviews
Arranging transportation to and from potential employment sites.
This segment of the program will be approached in an
assertive manner to acquire gainful employment for our blind/visually
impaired consumers. These services identified are geared to increase the
DOR Consumer's chances of obtaining and maintaining employment consistent
with their preferences and Individual Plan for Employment.
